Microsoft launches affordable Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 versions without Copilot AI to target budget oriented productivity users
Microsoft has quietly added more affordable variants of its hardware to its lineup. The Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 are now available in stripped-down versions that lack the hardware required for Copilot+ AI features. These models are aimed at budget conscious customers looking for entry-level productivity devices without the added cost of local AI processing.
The primary compromise in these budget friendly models involves the processing unit and memory allocation. Both the new Surface Laptop 8 and the Surface Pro 12 are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus processor paired with 8 gigabytes of random access memory. Because of this memory limitation the machines do not meet the minimum hardware requirements established for Copilot+ PC certification. Storage capacity remains unaffected with both devices carrying a 256 gigabyte solid state drive.
Microsoft markets these computers at the entry level for everyday work and media use. Microsoft also stated that continual improvements being made to the Windows 11 operating system will help deliver consistent performance despite the hardware specifications. This offering by Microsoft represents a less expensive access point for those not needing the advanced on device machine learning functionality.
Internal specifications of the lower end models leads to a huge reduction in price from the base case. The new Surface Laptop 8 configuration will cost $949 as opposed to $1599 for the base model of the standard AI enabled machine. Entry level Surface Pro 12's will start at only $849 which is a large saving in comparison with the standard model starting price of $1499. This will enable Microsoft to compete easier in the mid range student and enterprise market's in which Local AI is not required.
