Microsoft Surface RTX Spark Dev Box Launches as Compact Desktop Workstation for Developers with Nvidia Blackwell CUDA Cores and 128 GB RAM

Microsoft revealed more of their hardware lineup on the opening keynote of Build 2026 as they revealed the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. As Microsoft's Mac Studio rival, this compact desktop workstation is designed for the developers that need some raw on device horsepower. The device came about 1 day after they released the Surface Laptop Ultra, and shows Microsoft quickly bringing Nvidia's new architecture across their premium PC range.

Like its laptop counterpart, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is driven by Nvidia's same underlying chipset. The desktop form factor, however, allows Microsoft to provide a higher sustained power target to the hardware. In the mini PC form, the Nvidia RTX Spark chipset is capable of a sustained 100 W power target. This powers the 20 ARM CPU cores as well as the 6144 Blackwell CUDA cores, offering sustainable performance under intensive compiles or rendering work that would cause thermal throttling in a laptop chassis. Supporting such intense workflows is the 128 GB of RAM bundled as standard.

This workstation stands out against the Surface Laptop Ultra, where continuous power delivery isn't the priority due to its slim laptop form factor; while it does pack a high brightness 2000 nit Mini LED screen with display performance to match the MacBook Pro 16. The Dev Box, conversely, emphasizes pure, raw, desktop utility where heavy compiling rendering workloads may run continuously, taking a backseat to providing a compact computing experience at desktop speeds.

More than just powerful, the Dev Box is also feature rich on the connectivity front and addresses the criticisms leveled at the modern developer laptop. Connectivity on the machine includes a 3.5 mm audio jack, Ethernet for a solid wired network connection, and HDMI output. Furthermore, 2 Type A and 2 Type C ports offer support for legacy peripherals and high speed storage.

Microsoft will reportedly be launching a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box in 2026, there is no pricing information at this point.
