Amazon and Sony are looking for a new actor to play Kratos. Production has stopped. According to an exclusive report from Deadline
, the studios made the difficult choice to recast the iconic role after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a serious on set injury.
Hurst reportedly tore a bicep while performing a stunt. It is a heartbreaking turn for the actor, who had gained 40 pounds of muscle to prepare for the role. He has already undergone surgery, but recovery will take anywhere from 4 to 6 months. For a physically demanding role like Kratos, reaching full strength could take up to a year. Because the production schedule cannot accommodate such a long delay, the show will move forward with a new lead. Preproduction is expected to start up again next month, with cameras rolling by mid autumn.
The shutdown is a massive financial blow for the studios. Before the injury occurred, the crew had already finished filming 4 full episodes in Vancouver. Those episodes must now be completely reshot with the new actor. Using the existing footage is practically impossible because Kratos has a young co star, Callum Vinson, who plays his son Atreus. Child actors grow too quickly to match old footage seamlessly.
Showrunner Ronald D. Moore originally planned to film 2 seasons back to back. That plan remains in place despite this setback. The narrative adapts the Norse era of the franchise, tracking Kratos and Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of their deceased matriarch, Faye. The supporting cast remains unchanged, featuring Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Olafur Darri Olafsson as Thor, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
Recasting a lead mid production is incredibly rare. In past years, major productions have handled these situations differently. For example, Netflix
paused Cowboy Bebop
for nearly a year when star John Cho injured his knee. In other cases, like the sports drama Swagger
, Winston Duke was replaced by O Shea Jackson early in the shooting schedule. Amazon and Sony ultimately decided that a recast was the only viable path to keep God of War on track.
