AMD Invests $5 Billion Dollars in Anthropic to Secure Instinct MI450 Chip Orders

AMD has announced a massive partnership with Anthropic to challenge Nvidia dominance in the artificial intelligence sector. The chip giant will invest up to $5 billion dollars in the startup using milestone based payments over the coming years. In return, Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD next generation Instinct MI450 chips starting in the 1st half of 2027.

This deal comes as software developers search for ways to escape their reliance on Nvidia expensive hardware. AMD has been working hard to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing market for specialized silicon. At the same time, Anthropic is rushing to secure the immense computing power needed to run its popular Claude models. The 2 companies are combining their resources to solve both problems at once.

Anthropic plans to deploy these new chips inside its own data centers. The startup will also lease extra computing power through cloud providers and newer specialized network operators. The Wall Street Journal also pointed out that AMD is negotiating to provide financial support for leasing structures in future Anthropic facility projects. This financial backing will help Anthropic scale its operations much faster than before.

The collaboration is not just about a cash injection or hardware orders. AMD CEO Lisa Su explained that engineering teams from the 2 companies have already been working together on long term planning for large scale installations. Under a separate engineering agreement, AMD will use the Claude model from Anthropic to improve its own chip design processes and boost hardware performance. This 2 way partnership shows how closely hardware and software are merging to handle the computing demands of the future.
