Sony and Santa Monica Studio have revealed God of War Laufey as the next major PlayStation 5 exclusive. The upcoming adventure features a faster combat system and focuses on the character Faye rather than Kratos. The game will arrive in stores in February 2027 as a physical release before Sony transitions to a digital only distribution model.
The story follows Faye after her death at the start of the 2018 Norse epic. She enters the Everywhen which serves as an afterlife for deities. This journey introduces gods from outside Greek and Norse mythologies for the 1st time in the franchise. Actress Deborah Ann Woll portrays Faye while Jack Quaid voices a cosmic cube companion named Phranque. The 2 actors joined studio creative head Cory Barlog on stage at San Diego Comic Con to share details about the project.

Early impressions of the title remain mixed among players. Fans praised the visual style and rapid combat pacing but criticized some simpler elements shown in a 20 minute gameplay reveal. That footage showed Kratos and Atreus at Faye's funeral pyre before Kratos helps Faye escape a brief imprisonment. Players are still unsure how much Kratos will actually appear in this spin off story before the credits roll.
To address the absence of Kratos Cory Barlog confirmed that another major entry is already in development. This 2nd project will star Kratos and connect directly to the events of the current game. Having a separate title in development allowed the studio to focus purely on Faye without feeling pressure to force Kratos into her journey. The Kratos led sequel does not have a confirmed release window yet.
Launching in February 2027 puts the game in a highly competitive winter window. Other major releases during that period include Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, Fable, and Metro 2039. The decision to ship the title on a physical disc is a key factor for collectors. Sony previously stated that all games releasing in 2028 and beyond will be digital only which triggered a strong reaction from physical media supporters.
