French developer Midgar Studio has officially closed down after its parent publisher Nacon made the decision to dissolve the team. Best known for the 2021 role playing game Edge of Eternity, the studio struggled to survive despite carving out a dedicated community of players. The closure marks another casualty in a brutal multi year wave of video game industry layoffs.
Founder Jeremy Zeler Maury announced the closure in a post on LinkedIn, bringing a formal end to the team. While the studio officially operated under its current name for 8 years, the founder explained that the collective journey actually spanned nearly 2 decades of active development. In his statement, Zeler Maury reflected on the long path of the independent team.
The studio gained popularity with the release of Edge of Eternity, a Japanese style role playing game that launched after a lengthy period in early access. While the game received mixed reviews from critics, it built a loyal following and eventually made its way to consoles. Later, the team released the role playing game Edge of Memories with financial backing from publisher Nacon, but the commercial reception was not enough to save the business.
This shutdown is part of a larger contraction across the entire video game sector. Over the past 2 years, massive layoffs and studio closures have hit both indie developers and major corporations. The fate of Midgar Studio serves as a grim reminder that even releasing moderately successful projects cannot guarantee a studio will survive in the current economic climate.
