Union Memory Launches DRAMless UM301a M.2 Enterprise Boot SSD

Union Memory has introduced the UM301a, a new enterprise M.2 SSD built specifically for server boot environments. The drive uses a DRAMless architecture running on PCIe Gen4 x4 to eliminate memory crash risks in large data centers. It delivers sequential read speeds up to 5000 MB per second with storage options reaching up to 1.92TB.

Onboard memory cache can boost peak drive speeds, but it also introduces an extra point of failure in large server racks. Unrecoverable DDR memory errors can trigger sudden system crashes. Union Memory engineered the UM301a without onboard DRAM specifically to eliminate that failure point. This design gives cloud operators much better stability across massive hardware clusters. The company rates the drive for a mean time between failures of 2,000,000 hours, with an uncorrectable bit error rate below 1E 17.

Performance remains strong despite the lack of an onboard cache. Built around the NVMe 1.4b protocol, the drive is available in 480GB, 960GB, and 1.92TB configurations. All capacities hit 5000 MB per second in sequential reads. The top 1.92TB model reaches 2500 MB per second in sequential writes, with 4KB random performance delivering 350K IOPS read and 12K IOPS write speeds. Average latency is equally quick, clocking in at 20 microseconds for sequential transfers, 110 microseconds for random reads, and 100 microseconds for random writes.

Endurance ratings are tailored to handle constant operating system logging and background updates. The series delivers an endurance rating of 0.5 drive writes per day, which works out to 912.5 TBW per terabyte of capacity. Union Memory confirmed the M.2 80 form factor is ready for integration into modern server motherboards, giving corporate clients a clean, reliable boot solution that cuts unnecessary hardware overhead.
