Fujifilm has released the instax SQUARE 2, an instant camera featuring 3 focal modes and a physical color tint switch. The device handles exposure automatically, prints square 62 x 62 mm photos, and introduces a dedicated Soft Haze film variant. European retail pricing starts at €109.99 for the camera and €11.99 for a film pack.
Turning the lens barrel powers on the camera and selects 1 of 3 shooting distances. Close up targets subjects between 0.3 and 0.5 meters, Standard covers 0.5 to 3 meters, and Landscape focuses on subjects beyond 3 meters. A small mirror next to the lens assists with framing selfies. Fujifilm added a physical Mood Filter switch on the body, allowing users to apply a warm amber tint, a cool blue tone, or standard film colors directly to the exposure.
The camera uses a 2 element 65.75 mm lens with a fixed f/12.6 aperture. An inverted Galilean optical viewfinder provides 0.4x magnification with an integrated target spot. The electronic shutter operates between 1/2 and 1/400 of a second, engaging slow synchronization in dim lighting conditions. The automatic exposure sensor covers LV 5.0 to 15.5 at ISO 800. The flash reaches from 0.3 to 2.2 meters and recharges in approximately 7.5 seconds. Printed photos eject automatically and develop fully in about 90 seconds.
Power comes from 4 AA alkaline batteries, which supply enough energy for roughly 300 exposures or 30 film cartridges. Users can substitute rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries, provided they do not mix battery chemistries. The body measures 139 x 119.5 x 71 mm and weighs 450 grams, featuring a mechanical exposure counter and a cartridge confirmation window. Available colors include Slate Blue, Misty White, and Brick Red. The accompanying Soft Haze square film reduces color saturation and softens contrast to produce lighter highlights and warm diffused shadow tones in 10 shot packs.
