S Game director Soulframe shared the story of how an impromptu presentation secured PlayStation backing for Phantom Blade Zero. Speaking in an interview with PCGamesN, the developer detailed how an unpolished demo caught the attention of top Sony executives during a routine meeting. The action title is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC later this year.
The studio originally focused on smaller mobile titles before pursuing the larger scale project with investment from Tencent. While pitching an early software mockup to a PlayStation business representative, senior leadership including Shuhei Yoshida and Christian Svensson were sitting nearby. The representative called the executives over to watch the demonstration, prompting an immediate reaction from Svensson:
Holy shit! Who are you? This is so impressive.
Sony invited the team to present the game during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase. S Game had only 2 months to compile existing assets into a 3 minute reveal video. Despite competing against high profile releases like Marvel Spider Man 2, the Phantom Blade Zero presentation became the 2nd most viewed trailer of the entire broadcast.
The partnership between S Game and PlayStation expanded after the broadcast, leading to dedicated showcase events for the title.
