Sony LYTIA 720 Image Sensor Delivers 50 MP Resolution and 50 Percent Noise Reduction

Sony has announced the LYTIA 720, a 50 MP stacked CMOS sensor built for primary smartphone cameras. The 1/1.56 inch optical format brings advanced low light processing from higher tier LYTIA models to cut random visual noise by 50%. Mass shipments to hardware manufacturers are scheduled to begin next month.

Sony built the sensor using a stacked CMOS layout with individual 1 micron pixels. The hardware relies on Ultra High Conversion Gain technology to handle low light shooting. According to Sony data, this system cuts random image noise by approximately 50% compared to earlier hardware solutions. This allows smartphone cameras to produce cleaner nighttime images without heavy digital smoothing.

Video recording reaches 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with full HDR and all pixel autofocus active at the same time. Single frame HDR capture eliminates motion artifacts during fast scenes while keeping fast shutter response times. Sony also added Hybrid Frame HDR, delivering up to 100 dB of dynamic range. This system combines long exposure data for dark regions with short exposure data for highlights, preserving shadow details without blowing out bright areas.
