Deus Ex Returns? Eidos Montreal Reportedly Pursuing New Game
It has been a while since we stepped into Adam Jensen's augmented shoes in Mankind Divided. Nine years, to be precise. For fans, the wait for the next chapter of this cyberpunk saga is seemingly eternal. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel then?
Eidos Montreal Seeks Greenlight for New Deus Ex Project
If current rumors are to be trusted, the team at Eidos Montreal, the very same studio behind the recent Deus Ex games, has not given up on the dream yet. Sources are saying that Eidos Montreal is actively trying to get a new Deus Ex project off the ground. They are pitching it around to different companies and publishers. They are trying to find someone who believes in the franchise as much as they do.
The "Niche" Problem Hinders Deus Ex Revival
Here's the catch. Apparently, the response has been universally underwhelming. The word on the street is that potential partners see Deus Ex as "too niche." That's industry speak for "we don't believe it will be profitable enough to make it worth the risk." It is a harsh reality.
Word is that the commercial success of Mankind Divided might be one factor. Square Enix invested heavily in that game. While it was not a flop, perhaps it did not reach the blockbuster numbers needed to convince publishers that a new Deus Ex would be a sure-fire hit.
A New Concept Raises Questions
Curiously, one source indicated that the new Deus Ex pitch has "a rather curious concept." There is a hint of caution, however. The same source suggested that it might not quite be on the level of the other games. It is a tantalizing, if somewhat worrying, piece of information.
Something to clarify. This potential new project is supposedly not the Deus Ex game that was unfortunately canceled by Embracer Group earlier this 2024. So, it seems like Eidos Montreal's desire to revive the series is a continuous effort.
Uncertain Future, Persistent Hope for Deus Ex Fans
With recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal after finishing up an unannounced title, the future is uncertain. But that they persist in trying to revive Deus Ex is a positive sign for fans. Will someone finally take the chance on this classic cyberpunk world? Only time will tell if Adam Jensen will augment his way back into our lives as gamers.
