Hollow Knight: Silksong Locks in for September 4, 2025 Release
Team Cherry has given an official ending to the six-year wait as Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced to launch on September 4, 2025, during Gamescom 2025. Alongside the announcement, new gameplay footage showed new areas, enemies, and bosses.
Why Six Years Was Taken for Development
In an earlier report, Team Cherry's founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen spoke about the reasons for the long development time. The delay was not due to anything production-related-much more, all because of the actual development team and their passion for the project.
"It's been fun," said Pellen. "This whole thing is just a vehicle for our creativity anyway."
As a small studio, they kept adding things to the game. According to Gibson, the timeline was extended naturally when they realized the game was either going to match or exceed the scale of the original Hollow Knight.
The team took advantage of the financial success of the first game, selling more than 15 million copies, and had the freedom to enlarge the scope of the game without pressure. During the last two years of development, they have reportedly been polishing a lot of content and debugging.
DLC Systems Underway and Review Policy
Team Cherry has confirmed that work on DLC for Silksong has already begun, which further maintains their enthusiasm for the game even after its release.
To remain fair to the original Kickstarter backers of the game, they will not be sending pre-release review codes to any media. This means most reviews will end up being published a considerable while after the launch date.
