Tesla Ends Dojo Supercomputer Project Buys NVIDIA AI Chips for Self-Driving Needs

Tesla Stops Own Supercomputer Work, Turns to NVIDIA

Tesla is stopping work on its own Dojo supercomputer, a setup made to boost its Self-Driving and robots' aims. Now, the firm will buy more AI tech from others, mostly NVIDIA, for its big need for computing.

Why They Stopped Dojo

The choice to end the project comes as many skilled people left the Dojo team. Key points are:

  • Boss Leaving: The head of Dojo, Peter Bannon, is going to start his new firm, DensityAI.
  • A Lot of Staff Left: Near 20 people from the Dojo team went to DensityAI, started by Dojo's past boss, Ganesh Venkataramanan.
  • Moving Staff: Those still on the Dojo team are moving to other data center jobs at Tesla.

Tesla's AI Work Ahead

This change doesn't cut back on Tesla's goals for computing power. By not making its own parts, the firm will now buy them. This bigger use of outside firms like NVIDIA and AMD will help get the power needed for jobs like Self-Driving.

Also, Tesla's AI needs get help from another firm of Elon Musk, xAI. This firm plans to make huge data centers in the US, which can give the power needed for Tesla's smart features.

Not Sure What'll Happen with Samsung Chip Deal

Stopping Dojo makes folks wonder about Tesla's new deal with Samsung to make AI6 chips. What happens with this deal, part of Tesla's hunt for its own smart chips, is now not sure.
