Shipments of the Sony PS5 Cross 84.2 Million Units
The quarterly report from Sony for the second quarter of 2025 contains confirmation that shipments for the PlayStation 5 have now topped 84.2 million units. The report also indicates hardware steady and growing software sales, benefiting from an excellent first-party game launch.
Performance in Hardware Sales
In the last quarter, the company shipped 3.9 million PS5 consoles, a small increase from 3.8 million last year during the same period in 2024. However, launch-date sales for the PS5 still do not compare with the PlayStation 4 since even Microsoft is experiencing the toughest sales generation for its Xbox consoles this year.
Software Sales Grow Considerably
Sales from full game software on the PlayStation platform increased year over year. The sales figures showing the most significant software performance from the report were:
- Total Game Sales (Q2 2025): 80.3 million units
- Total Game Sales (Q2 2024): 77.7 million units
- First-Party Sales (Q2 2025): 6.3 million units
- First-Party Sales (Q2 2024): 5.3 million units
Ghost of Yōtei Drives First-Party Success
The majority of the increase in first-party software sales is attributed to the successful launch of Sucker Punch's title, Ghost of Yōtei. Within the first thirty-two days of its release, the game sold 3.3 million units.
