Apple Evaluates Advanced Glass Substrates From Samsung Electro Mechanics The Shift Away From Organic Materials

Apple evaluates advanced glass substrates from Samsung Electro Mechanics. The Elec reported that Apple is conducting tests of glass substrate samples which Samsung Electro Mechanics produced. The procurement represents a substantial increase in various customers for the component manufacturer because the entire technology industry requires new methods to replace standard packaging solutions.

The traditional structure of FC BGA uses organic materials as its essential core component. The organic materials used in artificial intelligence processors face increased risk of thermal distortion when their size increases to achieve better performance. Glass provides both high surface flatness and excellent thermal stability properties. These physical characteristics enable engineers to create extremely narrow circuit pathways through massive silicon designs without experiencing the typical problems of warping which affect those designs.

Broadcom had received initial sample units from Samsung Electro Mechanics before Apple began its testing process. Broadcom functions as the main designer who creates custom artificial intelligence silicon products by transforming complex corporate designs from Google , Meta and OpenAI into manufacturing blueprints. The companies are now working together on the development of an artificial intelligence server processor which Apple has designated internally as Baltra. TSMC will physically produce this specific processor according to information which leaked in late 2024.

Market analysts suggest Apple requested direct material samples for two strategic reasons. Apple needs to evaluate packaging materials for Baltra project through direct observation of their actual quality. The company has a history of bringing essential engineering designs to its internal operations which means it will work toward developing its own packaging systems for artificial intelligence server products.

The Sejong facility located in South Chungcheong Province serves as the base for current pilot operations. The corporate leadership team plans to begin mass production operations after 2027. The timeline requires Samsung Electro Mechanics to establish a glass core manufacturing facility through a partnership with Sumitomo Chemical Group. The business expects to complete its organizational structure and major equipment acquisitions for this project in the second half of 2026. The materials market in this sector lacks established standards which makes it essential for early users to build quality trust before their production needs to be fulfilled.
