Apple Intelligence System Introduces Flexible AI Model Selection Framework for Siri and iOS 27 Application Integration across Image and Text Tools
The Apple Intelligence system will enable users to choose between different artificial intelligence models for their iOS 27 applications. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple intends to move beyond a single artificial intelligence partnership for its upcoming software cycle. The company will implement its operating system's built in AI selection feature which users can access to choose between various AI models. The new change introduces a data processing mechanism through which Apple Intelligence will handle external information and control user selection in iOS 27.
The organization uses a new set of extensions which enable external software to combine with its fundamental operational platform. The extensions enable users to create connections between their installed AI applications and essential system functions which include Siri and all text and image generation tools. Users have the ability to choose a particular Google model that will take charge of image production tasks while they remain inside the base application environment. The method enables users to access particular neural network functions without needing to change their active program.
Apple has already initiated similar functionality in current versions of its software. Users can currently employ ChatGPT to analyze screenshots on iPhone for immediate answers. The upcoming expansion aims to scale this across various providers including Claude and Gemini. This allows the operating system to act as a hub for multiple competing intelligence services rather than a closed ecosystem.
Each AI model will operate with a distinct voice configuration which enables service providers to establish their unique audio identification system. Mark Gurman indicates that this design choice helps users identify which external tool is providing the response at any given time. By assigning specific vocal profiles to different providers Apple ensures transparency regarding which company is processing the user data for a specific query.
The transition toward an open model selection reflects a broader industry move toward interoperability. The public will receive complete information about how these AI extensions function on June 8 during the WWDC conference of 2026. The event will showcase Apple's strategy for maintaining its privacy systems while enabling third parties to interact with its system.
