Sony Beta Tests New PlayStation 5 Widget for Regional Game Popularity

Sony PlayStation 5 Statistics Tool Aims to Show Live Player Counts and Community Activity Metrics for Popular Console Games

Sony is seeking to close the data gap between consoles and PC by integrating a new statistics tool to PlayStation 5. While PC users have traditionally utilized outside databases for accurate numbers of player accounts PC users have not been privy to what kind of live audience the gaming world possesses console players may soon see that change with the inclusion of an interactive data set to The PS5. Currently in beta testing the application seeks to reveal the community's currently most popular played software.

Found in the dashboard under the heading of Community Activity is the trial application and, if the dashboard is on a US account, the localized ranks of that territory's popular titles. Not only does the widget rank titles by a localized count but the widget shows how many players that game has at the current moment and the public interest in that specific title has grew or shrank in terms of percentage. Users will be able to readily access what their territories players have gravitated towards.

First figures from the trial on the US seem to be dominated by blockbuster titles with Fortnite taking the #1 spot at the first week of the pilot with 14.6 million live players followed by Grand Theft Auto V in #2 with 5.13 million live users while Minecraft claimed #3 with 4.97 million players, This offers a clear insight in to what the actual population of live PlayStation 5 players there are at any given time.

At the moment, the widget is only available for a select few testers in the US region and Sony has yet to make a statement about the widget or any further plans of global roll out, This may mark the beginning of a more interactive PlayStation experience and more data sharing with developers and players. For now we'll have to keep our eye on the new widget.
