Bloober Team and Paramount Announce Star Trek Shadow Frontier for 2027

Bloober Team Announces Star Trek Shadow Frontier Psychological Horror Game in Partnership with Paramount Featuring Ro Laren for 2027 Release

Bloober Team adds Star Trek Shadow Frontier, their new psychological horror game that is developed in collaboration with Paramount Games Studio, to their line up of games. Star Trek Shadow Frontier is the 2nd Star Trek game developed by the Polish studio, following the VR body horror Star Trek Infection which was released earlier this year. The game is the second Star Trek game, and comes closely after the announcement of SAW Genesis at Summer Game Fest.

The game is set for release sometime next year in 2027, on the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series, the Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on Steam. Players will assume the role of a former Lieutenant, Ro Laren, voiced once again by Michelle Forbes. Players have crash landed on a dangerous planet that is dominated by an evil collective conscious that is trying to push the player into the depths of their own psyche.

The story centers on a character's experience of isolation and struggle for survival. Gameplay for Star Trek Shadow Frontier is going to focus around a story driven action adventure. Players will need to fend off the alien ecosystem as it is actively trying to absorb them into its system, while forcing severe psychological hallucinations upon their senses. Gameplay mechanics will revolve around navigating the hazardous landscape, and dealing with environmental threats that are eroding the player's sanity.

Players will have access to some classic franchise equipment to survive the hostile environment. They will be able to scan for items on the planet using the Tricorder, while defending themselves against enemies using their Phaser, which can be used to fight or solve puzzles within the environment. Exploration of the alien landscape is both necessary and a detriment, as the only way to complete objectives and survive is to venture out into dangerous territory, leading to mental degradation.

Paramount has voiced their faith in the studio to craft a new entry that both honor and pushes forward the Star Trek franchise. Senior vice president and head of creative and production for Paramount Games Studio Shawn Kittelsen had this to say about the partnership:

"We have full confidence in Bloober's ability to deliver a game that does justice to the Star Trek name while bringing something bold and new to the beloved franchise. For Star Trek Shadow Frontier, it was essential to partner with a studio that could both honor that legacy and push it forward."

This marks the increasing trend of sci fi franchise games leaning into horror games to offer more variety for their respective portfolios. With a release window confirmed for 2027, we are likely to see more details about gameplay come out in the following year as Bloober continues development over the next 12 months.
