Noctua has started publishing its own CPU cooler clearance measurements for popular PC cases after discovering that manufacturer specifications are frequently inaccurate. The Austrian cooling specialist found that official case manuals often understate or overstate the physical space available for massive heatsinks. To assist system builders, the company has integrated these custom measurements directly into its online compatibility database.
In many instances, the actual physical space inside a chassis exceeds the official listing. For example, the NZXT H2 Flow official documentation restricts cooler heights to 75 millimeters, but physical testing proved the case can accommodate coolers up to 79 millimeters. This extra room allows builders to install the NH L12Sx77 cooler, which would otherwise be dismissed based on official paperwork. Similarly, the Thermaltake TR100 offers 70.7 millimeters of space instead of the listed 68 millimeters, enabling the installation of the NH L12 Ghost S1 Edition. Popular Corsair models like the 4000D and 5000D series also deliver a full 10 millimeters of extra clearance, expanding the limit from 170 to 180 millimeters. This variance is highly useful for anyone wanting to pair the NH D15 G2 with taller memory modules.
Incorrect listings can also cause major installation failures when the actual clearance is tighter than advertised. The ASUS Prime AP201 is listed at 170 millimeters, but hands on testing revealed only 168.3 millimeters of room. This tight fit leaves no room to raise the front fan of an NH D15 G2, restricting users to standard 32 millimeter memory sticks. An even larger discrepancy exists in the Lian Li B4 mATX chassis. While the official manual claims 168 millimeters of clearance, the actual physical limit is 164.5 millimeters, meaning the flagship NH D15 G2 simply will not fit.
Noctua has already checked more than 100 computer cases and identified 56 models with inaccurate clearance listings. To make this data easily accessible, the manufacturer has added a specialized tool tip icon to its online compatibility database. This icon sits next to the maximum CPU cooler height specification on their website. Users can hover over the icon to view the real world measurements. The testing program is ongoing, with the company promising to evaluate more popular chassis models to help builders select parts with absolute confidence.
