Ubuntu Touch Version 24.04 2.0 Brings Wireless Printing and Browser Upgrades

UBports has released Ubuntu Touch version 24.04 2.0 as a major update for compatible mobile devices. The software brings integrated wireless printing, a redesigned layout for screens with camera cutouts, and a massive update to the default web browser engine. However, increased storage requirements mean that some older devices cannot install the build yet.

Device support for the new release is currently limited. Owners of the Fairphone 4 and Fairphone 5, the Volla device lineup, and the Xiaomi Poco X can install the update immediately. Older hardware such as the Google Pixel 3a and the Nothing Phone 1 must wait as the developer team works on system performance optimizations for these specific models.

The interface design has received an update to match modern screen standards. The Lomiri shell now offers native support for camera notches and teardrop cutouts, automatically shifting notifications and status icons to fit around the display geometry. Users also gain a built in screenshot editor to crop, rotate, or alter colors without needing external programs, while the digital keyboard receives an expanded library of emoji icons.

A dedicated print application is now available in the system settings panel. Once users download the necessary wireless drivers, they can send documents directly to network printers. The system status bar also received attention, now showing a clear icon when the phone is connected to wired ethernet via a dock, which is helpful when treating the smartphone as a desktop computer. Performance for classic X11 applications in the Open Store catalogue has also been improved.

Web browsing is much faster thanks to a major update under the hood. The default Morph Browser has transitioned from Chromium version 87 to Chromium version 131, allowing modern web applications to load correctly. This transition, alongside the migration to Qt 6, means the overall system storage requirements have climbed. As a result, some devices running the previous version 24.04 1.3 are locked out of this release due to insufficient storage space.
