Fable Director Explains Why Microsoft Never Cancelled the 10 Year Project

The upcoming Fable reboot has spent a full 10 years in active production without facing cancellation from Microsoft. Speaking with The Guardian, game director Ralph Fulton explained that executive faith in the franchise as core Xbox DNA shielded the team through development roadblocks. The anticipated fantasy RPG is now heading toward PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 next year.

Keeping an ambitious video game funded for a decade is rare in modern gaming. Publishers often cancel troubled productions long before they reach the finish line. Fulton explained that internal support inside Microsoft remained steady because company leadership viewed the franchise as a crucial part of their creative identity.

I truly believe that Fable is a very important game. That is what protected us throughout this extended development cycle because many people inside Xbox see Fable as a vital piece of the platform DNA. I would even go further and say it is simply an important game overall because it delivers a mix of elements that does not exist anywhere else.

Building the world of Albion took a heavy creative toll on the developers. Fulton noted that solving the design challenges of the game pushed him to reexamine how modern role playing titles function from the ground up.

Working on Fable forced me to think about games far deeper than ever before both as a developer and as a player. I think it will have that exact same effect on the people who play it.

The studio recently shared the official PC system requirements, showing that the title will run on standard modern hardware without requiring high priced parts. Releasing the game on both Xbox hardware and PlayStation 5 reflects a major evolution in publishing strategy, giving the decade long project an opportunity to reach the widest possible audience when it arrives next year.
