Lenovo Unveils Project Swan Rollable Screen Laptop Concept

Lenovo has revealed Project Swan, an experimental laptop featuring a motorized screen that expands sideways on demand. The machine functions as a compact 14 inch notebook before rolling outward into a wide 17 inch 16:9 display. But the company has not yet committed to a commercial release date or pricing.

Laptops with extra screen real estate usually require bulky external monitors or heavy dual panel chassis designs. Project Swan approaches the problem differently. When closed or running in its standard state, the laptop carries the footprint of a regular 14 inch computer. It measures only 17.9 millimeters in thickness and weighs 1.6 kilograms, making it easy to slip into a backpack for daily travel.

The mechanical magic happens when you need more room to work. An internal motor unrolls the flexible display outward across the horizontal plane. Within seconds, the viewable canvas widens into a 17 inch screen with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Unlike previous concepts that extended vertically, this sideways expansion creates natural room for running documents side by side, monitoring wide data dashboards, or editing media timelines.

Lenovo showed off the working prototype during its latest Berlin trade show showcase. The design uses an intricate roll and slide mechanism engineered to keep the flexible panel flat and rigid during daily typing sessions. This horizontal layout avoids making the laptop top heavy, which was a common flaw in earlier stretching display experiments.

Hardware specifications like processor choices, battery capacity, and display resolution remain under wraps. Lenovo representatives indicated that the machine serves as an engineering testbed to gauge consumer interest in wider form factors. While commercial availability is still undecided, Project Swan shows that PC makers are actively rethinking how portable computers deliver larger workspaces.
