Panasonic has announced the LUMIX S 20mm F2.5, an ultra compact prime lens designed specifically for street photographers. Weighing just 142g, the wide optic pairs an F2.5 aperture with physical customization controls tailored for lightweight mirrorless bodies like the LUMIX S9. Panasonic has not yet revealed official pricing details.
Street creators often struggle with bulky full frame glass that draws unwanted attention. This new optic aims to solve that problem. At just 40.9 millimeters long and weighing 142g, it offers extreme portability for travel and daily shooting. The F2.5 maximum aperture allows creators to shoot in low light settings without pushing ISO levels too high. Panasonic designed the form factor to match seamlessly with compact L mount bodies like the LUMIX S9.
Despite its diminutive size, the internal optical formula is surprisingly complex. The lens features 11 elements arranged across 9 groups. This includes 3 aspherical elements and 3 ED extra low dispersion elements to control optical aberrations and color fringing. A 7 blade circular aperture diaphragm helps create smooth background blur for close subjects.
Close range shooting is another strong point. The optic achieves a minimum focusing distance of 0.18 meters, letting photographers get close to small details. Around the barrel, you will find a 62mm front filter thread for standard screw on filters. The lens body also includes a customizable focus ring and a dedicated FN button that shooters can assign to favorite camera functions.
