Range Rover has officially launched the production version of its first electric SUV. The new Range Rover Electric keeps the familiar luxury styling while switching to a dual motor setup built for both street driving and rough trails. US buyers can order the vehicle right now starting at $138,000.
Under the floor sits a dual motor system using permanent magnet synchronous motors on both axles. Together they push out 542 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. That stands as the highest torque output across the entire Range Rover lineup. Acceleration is quick for a large vehicle. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with passing speed from 80 to 120 km/h taking just 2.7 seconds.
Power comes from a large 118.5 kWh battery pack built with 344 prismatic cells. The system runs on an 800V architecture and accepts DC fast charging up to 350 kW. You can push the pack from 10% to 80% charge in about 22 minutes. Plugging in for 10 minutes adds roughly 200 km of driving distance. Total estimated EPA range reaches around 536 km on a full charge.
Electric propulsion did not water down the trail performance. The Integrated Traction Management software can adjust motor speeds within 50 milliseconds. Another system called Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can route anywhere from 0% to 100% of the available torque straight to the rear wheels. When you turn on Single Pedal mode, the SUV can scale hills with a 33 degree angle and manage steep 45 degree declines. Water crossings are easy too, thanks to an 89 cm wading depth.
Orders are open across the US market right now with base pricing set at $138,000 before delivery fees. To ease concerns about electric reliability, Range Rover includes an 8 year or 161,000 km warranty covering the battery pack and both electric motors. Deliveries will roll out to customers soon.
