SteelSeries has entered the competitive controller market with the Aeon Pro, a premium wireless gamepad for Xbox and PC. The device packs a built in OLED screen, mechanical switches, and a swappable dual battery system into a package priced at $259.99. With a price tag higher than most rivals, it faces fierce competition from established gamepad makers.
The small OLED display sits right at the top of the controller. It lets you switch connections between Xbox, PC, and Bluetooth without digging through console menus. You can also remap buttons, tweak vibration sensitivity, and swap game profiles directly on the hardware. It saves time. For deeper adjustments like stick deadzones or complex profile management, you still need to open the SteelSeries GG app on a PC.
Battery management is easily the most practical part of the package. SteelSeries includes 2 battery packs in the box, with each pack providing around 12 hours of playtime. While you use 1 pack, the second charges inside the included wireless desktop base station. This is the exact same battery format used in the Arctis Nova Pro and Elite headsets. The base station itself features 2 USB C ports to maintain simultaneous wired links to an Xbox and a PC, switching between them automatically or on command.
Under the hood, the gamepad uses Hall effect sensors in the analog sticks and triggers to eliminate stick drift. Most face buttons rely on mechanical switches instead of rubber membranes, giving every press a sharp tactile click. You also get 2 stage trigger locks that turn long pulls into rapid mouse clicks. Around back, 4 fixed paddles provide extra inputs. SteelSeries opted against removable paddles to avoid loose fittings over time.
At $259.99, the Aeon Pro is one of the most expensive controllers on the shelf. Shockingly, it does not include a travel carrying case in the box. Sony sells the DualSense Edge for $60 less, while 8BitDo offers the Ultimate 3E with swappable components for $149.99. Even older alternatives like the $99 Steam Controller offer deeper button customization. SteelSeries has built a capable flagship, but buyers will have to weigh whether the screen and battery setup justify the premium cost.
