iFixit has disassembled the iPhone Duo, uncovering potential mechanical flaws inside the first folding phone from Apple. The teardown points to internal hinge clearance problems as the likely trigger for reported screen failures and dead pixel lines. Apple earned a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, marking the highest rating the lab has awarded to a folding handset.
iFixit investigated the mechanism after owners reported clicking noises followed by lines of broken pixels along the inner crease. Technicians combined computed tomography scans, patent diagrams, and disassembly footage to construct a 3D model of the moving parts. The physical evidence shows that display damage concentrates near the boundary between the central hinge support and the ribbon cable channel. When the phone folds shut, the support plate must drop down to create space for the teardrop bend. If this plate fails to clear completely, the panel presses directly into protruding metal components. Internal guide rails also lift during folding, compounding pressure if tolerances drift.
Controlled debris exposure revealed vulnerabilities in the moving structure. Introducing loose dust produced audible crunching inside the hinge, though iFixit stated this test falls outside standardized IP68 laboratory procedures. The inner folding screen uses a matte nanotexture coating that diffuses reflections to make the central crease less noticeable. Microscopic analysis showed that Apple altered the shape and spacing of individual subpixels across the fold to disguise the panel bend. Pixel density also drops directly above the internal camera to let more light reach the image sensor.
Apple engineered several internal parts for direct disassembly. The outer display pulls away cleanly, while the perimeter frame around the inner panel secures with mechanical clips. The electrical system splits across 2 batteries rated at 11.567 Wh and 7.506 Wh, totaling 19.073 Wh. Both cells lock into the frame with specialized adhesive that debonds when exposed to a low electric current. Technicians called this the cleanest battery removal method seen on any folding phone to date. The iPhone Duo holds a provisional score of 5 out of 10, with final judgment pending the availability of replacement parts.
