The KDE team has released Plasma 6.8, introducing unified window decoration rules and lower memory consumption across the desktop environment. This release completes the transition to Wayland while retaining XWayland compatibility for older software. The update is rolling out now across major Linux distributions.
Plasma 6.8 adds native window decoration rules that apply rounded corners, drop shadows, and custom borders to applications using their own client side title bars. The updated Union theme engine provides visual consistency across Qt Widgets software and modern applications. KDE now runs entirely on Wayland by default, preserving support for legacy X11 software through XWayland. The KWin compositor defaults to triple buffering on NVIDIA graphics cards to eliminate frame drops during desktop navigation. Color reproduction receives an upgrade with reworked internal handling for HDR content and ICC color profiles.
System Monitor allows users to assign specific processor cores to resource heavy processes. The utility also reports video memory consumption as a direct percentage. The Spectacle screen capture utility captures desktop video while recording system audio and microphone inputs at the same time. The utility also outputs higher visual fidelity during screen recording sessions.
Remote desktop functionality features lower input latency and higher frame delivery. An exclusive access mode locks the host physical display and mirrors the session onto an identical virtual screen. Clipboard synchronization works in 2 directions between host and client systems. For administrative tasks, the release introduces Kscreenctl for display configuration through command line scripts and macros. The Kup backup utility joins the default software suite, while the autostart manager allows users to disable startup applications without deleting user configurations.
