Qualcomm Signs Multi Year Agreement to Build SpaceX Starlink 5G Ground Network

Qualcomm has signed a multi year agreement with SpaceX to build out the terrestrial network for Starlink Mobile across the United States. Under the deal, the chipmaker will supply cellular radio equipment, baseband processing units, and management software. The rollout aims to combine satellite links with ground infrastructure to challenge established wireless carriers starting in 2027.

Deployment plans call for hardware installation across tens of thousands of major cellular towers nationwide starting in 2027. Qualcomm confirmed the deal represents its largest 5G equipment contract to date, though both companies withheld the total dollar value. The hardware utilizes a multi band architecture designed for phased network installation, leaving room for future software updates and machine intelligence at the cell site level.

Qualcomm aims to lessen its revenue dependence on smartphone processors by expanding its presence in cellular infrastructure. The company previously supplied hardware for mobile network builds in Japan and Vietnam. This project places Qualcomm in direct competition with Marvell, Broadcom, and Intel to deliver high capacity silicon for macro radio systems. Qualcomm stated its radio hardware uses advanced beamforming to direct transmission signals toward active devices, raising overall capacity and spectrum efficiency.

SpaceX plans to create a competitive nationwide carrier to rival AT&T, Verizon, and T Mobile by linking low Earth orbit satellites directly to land based cellular sites. Executing this concept requires major capital investment. SpaceX has started acquiring wireless spectrum licenses while negotiating physical tower leases with infrastructure operators. The project remains under close market observation as the company attempts to fund and deploy ground network hardware on a national scale.
