Intel Retires an Entire Generation of Processors
In a move to streamline its product lineup, Intel is discontinuing dozens of processor models, marking the end of an era for some of its popular CPUs. Surprisingly, even the mighty Core i9-12900KS, released in early 2022 and briefly holding the title of the most powerful in its series, is being sunsetted.
Alongside the 16-core Alder Lake flagship, Intel is saying goodbye to around 30 models from its 10th generation Comet Lake family. This includes non-K series chips, as their overclockable counterparts were already discontinued in late 2023.
The list of discontinued CPUs spans various categories, from entry-level Pentium Gold and Celeron processors to Core i3 and Core i5 models, and even workstation-grade Xeon W-1250 chips. Essentially, Intel is bidding farewell to its 10nm-based processor lineup. However, reports suggest these older models only accounted for a meager 1% of sales in some regions, with the newer Alder Lake series dominating consumer demand.
While the Core i9-12900KS might be on its way out, it won't disappear immediately. Intel will continue accepting orders until January 2025, with production ceasing in July 2025.
