In AWE 2025, Qualcomm showcased the latest processor behind smart glasses: Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1. This chip has been designed precisely to revolutionize the performance and design of next-generation AI-based eyewear.
The major improvement is that the Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 also achieves a reduction in size. According to Qualcomm, it has a swollen 26% smaller size than the previous one, which helps bring down the thickness of smart glasses by up to 20% in the temples, bringing a design that is lighter and more comfortable to wear.
Besides miniaturization, the chip is said to have higher energy efficiency. Apart from creating longer battery life for users, this promises to reduce power usage for common smart glass capabilities such as Bluetooth audio streaming, video playing, and computer vision processing.
Most compellingly, Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 promises on-device small language models (SLM). Qualcomm demonstrated running an Llama 1B-based assistant directly on the chip, without cloud processing and net connectivity. This opens up more responsive, intimate, and safe interactions with AI.
The new chip promises to include better user interaction and tracking features that include:
- Gesture control in navigating and interacting within the glasses.
- Motion tracking for a more complete augmented reality experience.
- Health and well-being monitoring features.
Such advances position the Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 to play a vital role in intelligent AI glasses, making it more handy and robust for everyday use.
