The Thunderbolt 5 update together with the Studio Display XDR marks the introduction of fresh monitor products by Apple
On March 3, 2026, Apple announced significant updates to its desktop monitor series. The lineup now includes an upgraded standard Studio Display and a high performance successor to the Pro Display XDR which has been rebranded as Studio Display XDR. The models utilize Thunderbolt 5 for accelerated data transfer and their new panel technology serves both creative and medical professionals.
The standard Studio Display maintains its 27 inch 5K Retina resolution (5120x2880) and 600 nit brightness levels. The system underwent complete changes to its internal components and connection options.
The monitor now includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports which enable users to connect multiple displays through daisy chaining while achieving faster data transfer rates with their connected devices. The system now features a 12 megapixel camera which enables Center Stage and Desk View functionality to enhance video conferencing performance.
The system now features additional two USB C ports which enable users to link their standard accessories. The Studio Display XDR replaces the aging Pro Display XDR by transitioning to a 27 inch 5K Retina XDR display. The display supports high end HDR workflows through its following specifications
- The system utilizes mini LED backlighting together with 2304 local dimming zones for precise contrast control.
- The system has two different brightness levels which include a peak of 2000 nits for HDR and 1000 nits for SDR with a contrast ratio of 1000000 1.
- The color accuracy of the system extends to IP3 and Adobe RGB color spaces with Rec. 2020 HDR coverage exceeding 80%.
The system supports a refresh rate that can be adjusted between 47Hz and 120Hz. Apple has made these displays capable of serving specialized applications in professional fields. The displays now include DICOM presets which allow medical professionals to obtain imaging results. The Medical Imaging Calibrator tool has been added to macOS so that diagnostic radiologists can use these displays for clinical purposes.
The audio system of both models contains three studio grade directional microphones and a six speaker array which enables spatial audio processing. The Studio Display XDR functions as a central hub which allows users to power their laptops through Thunderbolt 5 while charging at a maximum capacity of 140W.
The new hardware becomes available for pre order starting March 4 2026 while it will officially hit retail stores on March 11. The pricing structure establishes the following cost ranges.
- The Studio Display pricing begins at $1599.
