Agility Robotics has introduced Digit 5, a humanoid robot built to share floor space with human warehouse workers. The machine uses specialized AI and proximity sensors to halt, step aside, or crouch down to clear room when someone walks nearby. It is designed to work in open warehouse layouts without needing safety cages.
Working alongside heavy industrial machinery usually presents real physical risks. Digit 5 attempts to solve this problem by actively backing down from human contact. An array of onboard sensors constantly scans the surrounding room for nearby personnel. When a person steps into the robot path, internal software decides whether to change course or fold its limbs to shrink its physical footprint. During company demonstrations, the robot dropped into a low crouch the moment an employee approached. Agility Robotics tested these behaviors under OSHA guidelines to ensure the system meets federal workplace safety regulations.
The physical specs reflect practical warehouse requirements. Digit 5 can lift objects weighing up to 22.7 kg and reach storage shelves up to 2.2 meters high. Battery runtime lasts up to 90 minutes on a single charge. While that battery life requires routine charging rotations, Agility points to real world track records to prove reliability. Earlier versions of the Digit platform have already logged roughly 65,000 operational hours across commercial test projects.
