But this sudden retreat comes as the developer attempts to salvage its troubled extraction shooter, Marathon.
Studio executives published a direct statement admitting to years of missteps that alienated long term fans. Destiny 2 was previously scheduled to conclude its storyline with Monuments of Triumph, which was framed as the final expansion for the franchise. Bungie is now scrapping that exit plan entirely. The development team is preparing to unvault older campaigns, raids, and destinations that were removed from the game, aiming to bring back the original player experience that defined the early years of the title.
The sudden reversal is closely tied to the difficult reception of Marathon. Rather than pulling the plug on the extraction project, Bungie is redesigning the title from the ground up. The revised vision shifts the game toward a deeper survival format, giving players the choice between co op PvE assignments, competitive PvP encounters, or mixed PvPvE sessions. This setup is designed to give players more control over how they engage with the world instead of forcing everyone into high stakes extraction matches.
