Nintendo has officially revealed a custom The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary edition of the Switch 2 console alongside a matching Pro Controller. Shown during the latest franchise anniversary broadcast, the special hardware packages launch in late October. A deluxe version of the controller with an exclusive display stand will sell only through the official Nintendo store.
The anniversary hardware celebrates 40 years of Link and Zelda with custom shell artwork and matching accessories. Standard retailers will carry both the limited Switch 2 console bundle and the standalone Zelda themed Switch 2 Pro Controller. But hardcore collectors get an extra option directly from Nintendo. An exclusive controller bundle that includes a dedicated display stand will be sold only on the official Nintendo web store. Both hardware options arrive on shelves in late October.
Custom Zelda hardware is a long running tradition for Nintendo. The company has released custom hardware for almost every handheld system across the past 20 years. That habit started back in 2004 with the gold Game Boy Advance SP featuring the Triforce crest for The Minish Cap. Nintendo followed up in 2006 with a gold DS Lite for Phantom Hourglass.
The 3DS era brought even more collector options. A black 25th anniversary 3DS launched in 2011, followed by a gold and black 3DS XL for A Link Between Worlds and a gold New Nintendo 3DS XL for Majora Mask 3D. Home consoles saw special releases too, such as the Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle with its custom GamePad. More recently, Nintendo delivered the Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED with its white dock, alongside a gold Switch Lite in 2024. This new Switch 2 package continues that two decade tradition for the 40th anniversary milestone.
