Volkswagen Reveals Electric ID.3 GTI with 322 HP and Rear Wheel Drive

Volkswagen has unveiled the electric ID.3 GTI to mark the 50th anniversary of its iconic GTI badge. Pre sales open in early 2027, with final pricing arriving closer to launch.

Under the body sits a single electric motor pushing 545 Nm of torque and 322 hp (240 kW). Power goes exclusively to the rear wheels. That makes this the 1st rear wheel drive GTI in the history of the brand. It sprints from 0 to 100 km per hour in 5.6 seconds. For comparison, the petrol powered Golf GTI Edition 50 does the same run in 5.3 seconds with 321 hp.

Volkswagen altered the chassis with adaptive sports suspension and progressive steering to keep the car agile. Drivers get Launch Control for rapid starts off the line. A dedicated GTI button sharpens the throttle response, stiffens the suspension, and tunes the steering for aggressive cornering. This is the 2nd all electric Volkswagen to wear the badge, following the smaller ID. Polo.

The 79 kWh battery delivers up to 601 km of range under the official WLTP testing cycle. Fast charging reaches speeds up to 183 kW. That allows the pack to charge from 10 to 80% in 29 minutes. Volkswagen plans to open order books in early 2027, while pricing details will arrive closer to market release.
