Volvo Refreshes Hybrid XC40 with Google Gemini and Updated Design

Volvo has unveiled a major redesign for its hybrid XC40 compact SUV. The refreshed model introduces a sharper exterior look alongside an upgraded infotainment system powered by Google Gemini. However, the company has yet to reveal critical powertrain details ahead of its early 2027 dealer rollout.

The exterior changes bring a bold revision to the recognizable crossover shape. Up front, the vehicle gains an updated interpretation of the signature Thors Hammer headlights, matched with a restyled radiator grille, sculpted hood, and new front fenders. The rear receives new taillight units, a revised bumper, and an updated tailgate design. Buyers will be able to choose between 3 diamond cut alloy wheel options in 18, 19, and 20 inch sizes.

Inside the cabin, the primary upgrade centers on a new 11.2 inch high resolution touchscreen. Volvo redesigned the software interface to reduce menu clutter and allow for faster navigation with fewer screen taps. Google Gemini is built directly into the system to calculate routes, locate detour points, and manage incoming messages without requiring the driver to look away from the road. The interior layout also brings faster wireless phone charging and better storage bins for small items.

Safety hardware gets a substantial boost through an array of modern sensors. The vehicle carries 12 ultrasonic sensors, front and rear corner radars, a new forward camera, and multiple parking cameras. These sensors support automatic emergency braking, evasive steering assist, cyclist alerts when opening doors, and smoother lane centering. A 360 degree 3D camera view is available as an optional add on.

Volvo has kept performance numbers under wraps for now. Details regarding engine displacement, electric motor output, battery capacity, and pure electric range remain unconfirmed. Industry estimates place the starting price around $40,000 when the updated crossover reaches dealerships in early 2027.
