The Coalition has shared new gameplay and narrative details for Gears of War E Day, focusing on a prequel story that explores the initial Locust emergence. The studio confirmed the title targets 60 frames per second on Unreal Engine with upgraded strand based hair rendering and 4 player co op squad dynamics. Speaking in an interview with Destin Legarie, the development team confirmed the project serves as an Xbox exclusive showcase.
The campaign begins before the war starts, tracking 4 soldiers in civilian clothing inside a bar before the ground opens up. Players control a younger Marcus Fenix alongside Dominic Santiago as they confront the sudden emergence of the Locust horde. The narrative focuses heavily on the emotional rift between Marcus and Dom following the death of Dom older brother Carlos. Alongside the 2 iconic leads, squad mates named Mags and Lucas round out the 4 player squad.
The creative team outlined the specific atmosphere they wanted to capture during the opening hours of the campaign:
Our story starts with four soldiers in a bar who do not even all know each other, but they are united in that first moment. That first act has dread and horror, stuff people have not seen from Gears before.
The second act transitions the squad into standard armor as organized military resistance forms, opening up into wider combat environments before descending into chaos. The developer noted that the squad dynamic remains the emotional core of the experience, designed to reflect the four player cooperative gameplay.
The Coalition pushed Unreal Engine to achieve a stable 60 frames per second output while increasing geometric detail. Character models now use full hair strands groomed outside the engine rather than traditional polygon hair cards. For high end PC setups running hardware like the RTX 5090, the game includes a Ludicrous graphics setting designed to support future graphics hardware.
Combat encounters feature updated mechanics for iconic weapons alongside new additions. The classic Gnasher shotgun now supports an attachable bayonet for close quarters fighting in the campaign. A new weapon called the Gut Puncher functions as a timed grenade launcher, allowing players to bounce explosives behind cover or detonate emergence holes. The studio confirmed voice actor John DiMaggio returns to voice Marcus Fenix as the team prepares the game for launch.
