2026 Mercedes Benz EQS Redesign Features 800 Volt Architecture Steer By Wire Technology and Generative AI for Ultimate Luxury Performance

The EQS for 2026 receives its complete redesign through the implementation of an 800 volt power system and steer by wire steering technology. Through its April 13 2026 corporate disclosure Mercedes Benz announced its mid cycle mechanical update plans for the EQS electric sedan which marks the 140th anniversary of Carl Benz's first automobile patent. The engineers have transformed the EQS hardware system by replacing or upgrading more than twenty five percent of its components which enables the automobile to operate on the upcoming electric platform that will serve as the foundation for exceptional long distance travel.

The 2026 model year benefits from its implementation of a dedicated 800 volt electrical system which serves as its major engineering improvement. The automaker has expanded its battery capacity to 122 kWh through optimized cell chemistry which uses silicon oxide blended with graphite anodes without changing the battery pack's physical dimensions. The EQS 450+ variant now achieves a verified WLTP range of 926 kilometers thanks to the density upgrade which extends its range by thirteen percent compared to the previous model.

The transition to high voltage fundamentally changes how vehicles calculate their charging requirements. The sedan can now draw power at up to 350 kW through its operation at compatible terminal stations. Drivers can recover 320 kilometers of driving range through ten minutes of charging time. The vehicle divides its battery module into two equal parts for simultaneous charging at 175 kW through both sections when it connects to 400 volt infrastructure.

Mercedes Benz has confirmed that the revised EQS will be the first series production automobile from a German manufacturer to implement true steer by wire technology. The system which will launch after the initial market rollout removes all physical steering wheel connections to the front axle. Wheel movement now depends entirely on electronic signals which stop cabin vibrations from road bumps while providing flexible steering ratio changes.

A new rear axle design improves vehicle handling characteristics. The main drive unit now incorporates a two speed transmission. The lower gear handles rapid off the line acceleration, while a planetary gear set enables optimal highway cruising performance at higher speeds. The sedan now reaches a towing limit of 1,600 kilograms for its rear wheel drive versions which comes close to matching the 4MATIC all wheel drive system's capabilities.

The sedan now operates through the MB.OS supercomputer system which has completely replaced its previous digital control center. The system uses generative artificial intelligence to control the MBUX Virtual Assistant which connects directly to the company's cloud system. The interface handles intricate voice commands that include multiple layers of complexity while presenting itself to users through different digital avatars that include a special "LittleBenz" character designed for informal communication with the 55 inch glass Hyperscreen.

The MB.OS predictive functions extend throughout the entire physical ride experience. The sedan's AIRMATIC suspension system uses anonymous Car to X data from other road vehicles to change its dampers at specific moments before hitting bumps or road stops which keeps the cabin quiet.

Interior cabin safety and climate control have also seen unusual innovations. Front seats now include thermal safety restraints which emit up to 44 degrees Celsius of heat through the seatbelt webbing to persuade passengers to remove their heavy winter coats for enhanced crash protection. The vehicle maintains strict air quality control through its HEPA filtration unit which sits under the hood and removes almost all particulate matter from the air that enters the system.

Aesthetically, buyers will navigate two distinct visual identities. The Electric Art Line showcases the classic S Class hood design by combining an upright S Class hood ornament with a chrome grille that features vertical slats. The vehicle's front features a direct integration of the star into its design through the AMG Line which includes aggressive aerodynamic diffusers that maintain a drag coefficient of only 0.20.

The radically updated luxury sedan is currently available for orders. The domestic German market sets its retail price base at 94,403 euros which includes VAT while commercial enterprises can purchase it starting from 79,330 euros. The automaker states that bidirectional charging will become operational after launch through required over the air updates which enable the vehicle to supply power to homes and transmit energy to the grid.
