AMD CEO Lisa Su Forecasts Massive CPU Market Growth Driven by AI Infrastructure and Affirms China Strategic Importance for Global Hardware Revenue
At the industry AI forum in Taipei, AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su acknowledged a profound transition in global hardware demand and forecasted substantial growth for the processor market. Reports in Chinese media cite Su's statement that China remains an integral market for the company, responsible for about 20 percent of total revenue. She asserted that hardware demand is outpacing previous industry expectations, as companies scramble to deploy an array of technologies that form artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Su contrasted the recent stagnation of the processor market with its projected future expansion. Over the last 3 to 4 years the annual growth rate for central processing units remained slow, hovering between 3% and 4% as industry attention shifted primarily toward graphics processing units. However the acceleration of artificial intelligence inference and the rise of automated AI agents are revitalizing traditional processor roles. Su predicts that this shift will drive the central processing unit market to grow by more than 35% annually over the next 5 years, marking a period of intense demand for high performance silicon.
The previous trip to mainland China by the executive, ending at the AMD AI Developer Day in Shanghai, precedes her presence in Taipei. There, she affirmed that the company has a robust operational presence in the market for more than 30 years. The engineering department based in Shanghai is now one of AMD's largest R & D centers in its entire engineering network.
Su recognized domestic Chinese semiconductor companies' speed of development in terms of technology, and noted that the competition from Chinese players is advancing quickly. However, even with the rapidly changing environment, China continues to hold substantial market share across several sectors for AMD, and the company retains large amounts of active business, be it in the realm of PCs, consumer electronics and gaming, and China based data center operations.
