Nintendo Confirms Ground Up Remake of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for Switch 2

Nintendo Confirms Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake for Switch 2 Featuring Realistic Visuals and Year End Release

During its summer Direct presentation, Nintendo confirmed that it will be releasing a complete remake of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. It has already been revealed that a game which aims to replicate The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time has entered active development for the Nintendo Switch 2. The teaser trailer shown did not feature a preview of actual gameplay, but did reveal that this highly anticipated recreation will be released this year.

The short trailer featured an cinematic explanation for a forest youth born without a fairy familiar to guide his steps. It featured the view of a tapestry that camera then pulls back to reveal a young Link asleep in his bed with his hand glowing from the Triforce symbol. This version of the story abandons the painterly stylized look the game used in the critically successful Breath of the Wild and the Tears of the Kingdom for a style closer to realism, reminiscent of the dark colored tones of the Twilight Princess.

The official announcement marks the verification of rumors regarding this project. The popular leaker known in the industry as Nate the Hate stated that the game was in development prior to this show. Nate the Hate was also correct in saying that Nintendo would release a classic styled Star Fox game which they confirmed at a previous show earlier this year. This Zelda remake confirms the legitimacy of these latest leaks concerning the upcoming Switch 2 titles.

First released to critical acclaim on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is a major milestone in gaming history as the first in the 3 dimensional series. Over the years Nintendo has released numerous ports and remakes to preserve this classic. The most recently updated version, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, added a number of small quality of life improvements and changed the placement of the tricky Water Temple. This latest remake, however, is supposed to be a complete recreation utilizing the new console's advanced processing power.

It is quite difficult to remake a game widely considered the greatest of all time. There are huge industry expectations about this game, following the successful remake projects for both the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 as well as the Final Fantasy 7 3 part remake project. Nintendo included a short statement confirming that this remake of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is an ambitious project and will be built to take advantage of the power of the next generation of hardware.

A Nintendo 64 classic remade for the next generation exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. While no other information about changes to the game such as camera controls or combat modifications has been revealed, Nintendo stated that more will be revealed later this year. The announcement window has many expecting the release in the latter half of the year and will compete directly against several other significant releases toward the end of the year.
