Honor is preparing a new flagship powered by Qualcomm's SM8975 platform, and it brings Android's first 1:1 square selfie camera. The unusual front sensor lets users shoot wide angle photos and vlog footage without ever rotating the phone. A fresh leak from tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo confirms the handset also packs dual 200MP rear cameras tuned with ARRI cinema color science.
Square camera sensors are rare on mobile devices, but they solve a real annoyance for video creators. Traditional rectangular sensors force you to turn your device sideways if you want a horizontal clip. The 1:1 sensor eliminates that step. It captures an evenly proportioned square frame that software can crop horizontally or vertically on the fly. Honor previously tested this approach on its Robot Phone project, and the technology is now moving into regular consumer devices to give creators a wider, freer field of view.
The rear camera array is just as aggressive on hardware specs. The primary camera uses a 200MP sensor measuring 1/1.28 inch across with a bright f/1.57 aperture and 3 degree optical image stabilization to smooth out hand shake. It sits alongside a 50MP ultra wide camera for group shots and landscapes. For zoom, Honor included a 200MP periscope telephoto lens with a 1/1.4 inch sensor and an f/2.6 aperture. German cinema legend ARRI handled the color science, bringing movie style color profiles directly to the default camera software.
Under the hood, the phone runs Qualcomm's next top tier silicon, known internally as SM8975 and expected as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Other brands like Oppo and Vivo are reportedly testing square front cameras for their upcoming lines, but Honor looks set to beat them to store shelves. Full hardware details will become official when Honor formally reveals the Magic 9 series at its upcoming launch event.
