AXISRAY LAB Unveils BASH Controller with Stickless Optical Design

AXISRAY LAB has unveiled the BASH controller, a gamepad featuring an unusual stickless thumbstick design. The hardware relies on optical sensors beneath silicone caps to measure pressure and twist instead of traditional mechanical levers. Attendees got their first look at the device during industry showcases at Gamescom and TGS.

Traditional gamepads rely on carbon film or magnets to track stick movement. AXISRAY LAB is trying something different. The BASH controller replaces mechanical levers with silicone pads sitting on top of an optical tracking component called GumiTap. The internal optics measure physical shape changes in real time.

This setup registers standard directional tilts alongside downward press depth and rotational twisting, unlocking complex inputs. Players can also swap out the top caps for different shapes and textures to match their grip preferences.

The rest of the gamepad is packed with competitive features. It supports 3 mode connectivity and includes modular swappable faceplates. On the back, users get dual stop trigger locks and 2 sets of extra buttons. Motion controls are handled by a 6 axis gyroscope, and tactile feedback comes from linear vibration motors. Power is supplied by an 1800mAh internal battery.

An integrated control screen sits directly on the front plate. Beyond adjusting hardware settings, this display can actually run onboard 3D games directly on the controller. AXISRAY LAB has not yet announced pricing or retail availability.
