Sony Launches Ultralight FE 400mm F4.5 and 600mm F6.3 GM OSS Lenses

Sony has launched the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS, marking its lightest super telephoto prime lenses to date. Both barrels weigh under 1kg and support rapid autofocus tracking capable of keeping up with 120 frames per second continuous bursts. The pair is launching with a starting price of  $2,698.00.

Sharpness is preserved even when shooting wide open at maximum aperture. According to reporting by IT Home, Sony fitted both barrels with 3 Super ED elements and 1 standard ED glass element to eliminate chromatic distortion. Ghosting and flare are suppressed by a Nano AR Coating II layer. For tracking fast action, 2 XD linear motors power the autofocus assembly. This allows the internal glass to keep pace with 120 burst shots per second with full exposure calculation.

Weight distribution is the biggest practical change here. Sony pulled the heavy internal optical groups back toward the lens mount. This shifts the center of gravity closer to the camera body, improving handheld balance. Mounted to a standard Sony full frame camera, the entire setup weighs roughly 1.7kg. An 11 blade circular aperture mechanism helps produce smooth background blur.

The hardware includes 3 distinct optical stabilization modes designed to coordinate with in body sensor shift systems. Closest focusing distance sits at roughly 2.5 meters. Both models also work with standard Sony teleconverters for extra focal reach. Pricing starts at $2,698.00 for the 400mm F4.5 and rises to $3,698.00 for the 600mm F6.3 version.
