Ember Lab has moved the launch of Kena Scars of Kosmora into 2027 to allow extra development time for its expanded world. The sequel builds on the 2021 original with a much larger scope, elemental dungeon temples, and a rideable crystal canine companion. It will release on PC and PlayStation 5 in both physical and digital formats.
The story moves beyond the forest regions of the first game and takes Kena to the island of Kosmora. She travels there with her childhood companion Orfio to uncover forgotten history and confront her own past. Spirit Guides usually help the dead move on, but this adventure forces Kena to help living cultures while facing her own internal struggles. The island was once defined by 4 separate elemental societies before a cataclysm wiped out 1 of them.
Exploring this history involves navigating massive Alchemystic temples. These locations act as full scale puzzle dungeons that test player reflexes and award progression upgrades. The developers confirmed that while the game remains a character focused linear journey, the world offers far more optional routes to reward exploration.
Traversing the larger terrain required a total overhaul of movement systems. Kena now bonds with an ancient crystalline beast that functions as a mount across open ground. This companion is not just for travel. It fights alongside Kena in battles whether she is mounted or on foot, and it provides powers needed to solve environmental puzzles. Ember Lab stated that moving the launch into 2027 will ensure the expanded scope meets the quality bar set by their debut title.
