HUAWEI Makes Ascend 920 an All-In-One GPU
HUAWEI is making a new GPU, the Ascend 920, to work as a one-stop tool for many computing jobs. A report from The Information says this shows a big change in plan for the firm, moving past just AI chips to take on big names like NVIDIA and AMD.
A Step Past Just AI Tech
The Ascend 920 is being made as a GPU for many uses, able to handle lots of tasks, not just brain-like net tasks. This is a big twist from what HUAWEI has done before. Their current Ascend 910 series, big in China due to limits on NVIDIA, mainly works on AI uses. The new GPU aims to grow HUAWEI's skills and set it up as a strong choice against Western tech.
Tackling the Software Issue with CUDA Matching
A key feature said about the Ascend 920 is it may work with NVIDIA's CUDA software via a special matching layer. This means AI apps can work on HUAWEI's gear without big changes needed. Right now, HUAWEI uses its CANN platform, which is not yet popular or growing fast.
To push this goal, HUAWEI is also looking into the design tricks used in NVIDIA and AMD chips to help its next products meet common tech rules.
When It Might Start Being Made
The making of the HUAWEI Ascend 920 might start in 2026. This date shows the firm's big dream to be a top name in the world GPU market.
