NVIDIA Plans New China-Only Top GPU as GeForce RTX 5090 D V2

NVIDIA aims to roll out a new model of its top GPU for China, called the "GeForce RTX 5090 D V2." This step comes as a fix to the new US rules from 2023 that limit the use of high-tech graphics cards in China.

Setting: Adapting to Export Rules

The first NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 D was made to fit US rules then. But as rules changed, it couldn't be sold in China anymore. So, a new version had to be made to keep up with the market.

A HKEPC report says the GeForce RTX 5090 D V2 will launch in August. So, gamers in China need to wait one more month for this new top model.

Main Changes in the RTX 5090 D V2

The new card has big updates in its build to keep up with rules. Here are the main changes from past info:

  • GPU Chip: It now uses the GB202-240 chip, less than the GB202-250 in the first 5090 D and the GB202-300 in the global RTX 5090.
  • VRAM & Memory Line: Memory is now 24 GB of GDDR7 on a 384-bit line, 25% less than before.
  • Core Count: The core count is still 21,760.
  • PCB Layout: It has a new PCB layout, the PG145 SKU 40, to fit the changes in memory and chip.
  • Power (TBP): The total board power is lower, though we don’t know the exact numbers yet.

Effects on Play, Cost, and AI Users

While its play quality should stay close to the older 5090 D without being held back by memory, the cut in VRAM is a big minus. Even with this cut, the cost of the RTX 5090 D V2 is set to stay as before, giving buyers less for their money.

This reduction in VRAM will also hit small AI firms and fans in China hard, as they used the older model’s bigger memory for big local AI models.

Sure Name

The name "GeForce RTX 5090 D V2" was made sure by the tipster MEGAsizeGPU, ending talks that it might be called the "GeForce RTX 5090 DD."
