Sony Ends All Blu ray Disc Recording Business Operations Worldwide

The Sony company has declared its closure of all Blu ray Disc recording business operations. The company confirmed it will stop all worldwide production and shipment activities for recorder models which marks the end of this home media equipment category.

Sony Japan announced through its official statement that the company will start discontinuing all current Blu ray recorder shipments after February 2026. Sony confirmed that it will not create any new devices to serve this product category during upcoming time periods.

The company has discontinued production for several products which include

  • BDZ ZW1900
  • BDZ FBT4200
  • BDZ FBT2200
  • BDZ FBW2200

All remaining recorder models currently in the market will follow this discontinuation path starting in early 2026.

This decision only applies to Blu ray recorders which shows its specific nature to this product category. The company Sony stated that its present plans include continuing standard Blu ray and UHD Blu ray player production operations. The company will continue to sell devices which only function for playback purposes without recording capabilities to customers.

Sony has exited the recording business which leaves only a few main industry players to operate in international markets. Panasonic continues to operate its business while Samsung LG and OPPO have discontinued similar hardware production. The industry shift toward digital streaming and cloud based services results from changing consumer habits which now prefer those platforms instead of using physical disc recording methods.
