Apple Refines Wearables Strategy and AI Leadership Transitions While Progressing Smart Glasses and Foldable iPhone Development Timelines
Apple has changed its direction in the wearables market through two leadership changes. The company now develops display free smart glasses which it has named N50 instead of creating augmented reality headsets according to Bloomberg report. The company developed a new product which can handle photography and audio notifications and voice assisted interactions through an upgraded version of Siri. Apple uses high end acetate frames and proprietary chipsets to create a product which functions as a fashion icon instead of an oversized technological device.
The development of these glasses is part of a wider AI driven wearable initiative that includes next generation AirPods and camera equipped pendants. The scientists want to use computer vision for creating Apple Intelligence which detects information from its surrounding environment. Apple is currently testing four frame designs which include rectangular and circular options to ensure that its product meets its brand standards while Meta and Google depend on outside frame makers to produce their products. The release is currently expected to occur between late 2026 and early 2027.
The Apple foldable iPhone project continues to progress according to its established timeline despite market rumors about production difficulties in Asia. The launch has been delayed until 2027 according to rumors but internal assessments show that the original schedule will remain intact. The company will launch its new iPhone products in early September when it showcases the iPhone 18 Pro series. The device will improve Apple’s average selling price because it will become part of the premium flagship hardware collection.
John Giannandrea has completed his long anticipated departure from Apple after working there for an extended period. Giannandrea became an advisory consultant after his responsibilities of overseeing Siri and robotics were reduced in early 2025. Apple finished distributing his previous responsibilities to employees after he worked his final day this week. Craig Federighi who leads software development together with Eddy Cue who heads services and Sabih Khan who manages operations have taken charge of monitoring foundation models and AI testing. The departure ends an eight year period of disruption while Apple moves to reduce executive authority within its executive decision making base.
Apple maintains its support for the iPhone Air line because it views certain products as long term investments instead of products which should be sold immediately. The company currently faces a supply chain shortage which affects its Mac mini and Mac Studio inventory while customers increase their demand for hardware which supports local AI agents. The company shows that it will stick to its established design language and product hierarchies through its ongoing memory shortages and Liquid Glass implementation in software interfaces.
