AMD has launched the Ryzen 5 5500F, a budget gaming processor offering higher clock speeds and PCIe 4.0 support for $99. Early independent testing shows the Zen 3 chip outperforming the older Ryzen 5 5500 across several popular titles. However, performance gains swing wildly depending on the specific game engine.
The new silicon relies on the established Zen 3 architecture, bumping peak clock speeds to 4.4 GHz compared to 4.2 GHz on the standard Ryzen 5 5500. It also enables PCIe 4.0 support, which was previously locked to PCIe 3.0 on the older budget model. Cache remains modest at 16MB of L3 capacity, which is half of what you get on premium Vermeer processors like the Ryzen 5 5600. The chip drops integrated graphics entirely, targeting desktop builders who plan to use a dedicated graphics card from day 1.
Initial gaming benchmarks from the YouTube channel RandomGamingHD reveal how these small clock and bandwidth bumps translate in the real world. Testing was conducted using a Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB of video memory. In titles like Counter Strike 2, GTA V Enhanced, and Cyberpunk 2077, the Ryzen 5 5500F pulled ahead with roughly a 7% lead over the standard 5500. Demanding open world games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Crimson Desert showed a much tighter race, with the new chip ahead by only 2% to 3%.
Some game engines saw massive jumps while others saw zero change. The biggest leap appeared in Battlefield 6, where the 5500F pushed frame rates up by nearly 15%, hitting 106.9 frames per second against 92.1 on the older chip. Yet in Forza Horizon 6, both processors delivered virtually identical numbers, scoring 90.8 and 91.2 frames per second respectively. At an official retail price of $99, the processor offers a very cheap upgrade path for budget systems, provided your favorite games can actually use the extra speed.
