Fujifilm Launches XF 400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR Super Telephoto Prime

Fujifilm has launched the XF 400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR, a lightweight super telephoto prime lens built for sports and wildlife shooters. The optic offers 5.5 stops of stabilization, high speed linear autofocus, and full compatibility with teleconverters up to 1219mm equivalent reach. It goes on sale this month priced at $3,199.95.

According to official launch details from Fujifilm, the lens provides an equivalent full frame reach of 609mm on APS C camera bodies. The optical layout relies on 21 glass elements arranged across 14 groups. This design includes 2 Super ED and 4 ED lenses to suppress chromatic fringing. The front element features a fluorine coating to repel water and grease, while 20 separate weather seals allow the barrel to function in wet conditions and temperatures down to 10 degrees below zero.

Autofocus performance is handled by an internal linear motor that moves the focus groups quickly and quietly. Photographers get a focus preset function, custom control buttons, and a focus limiter switch that restricts tracking to distances past 5 meters for faster acquisition. The minimum focusing distance measures 2.75 meters with a maximum magnification of 0.16x. Despite its long reach, the entire barrel measures 104.5 by 239.5 millimeters and weighs just 1245 grams without accessories.

The lens pairs directly with existing X mount teleconverters to gain extra reach in the field. Adding the XF 1.4X TC WR extends the focal length to 560mm with an 853mm full frame equivalent field of view. Snapping on the XF 2X TC WR turns the system into an 800mm prime offering a 1219mm equivalent reach. Up front, standard 95 millimeter filters screw directly onto the barrel to complete the setup.
